Geothermal Energy for the Industrial Sector

Star Energy offers low-carbon geothermal heat solutions for the UK’s industrial sector, helping to advance long-term decarbonisation goals and reduce energy costs through the application of deep geothermal technology. Our turnkey service model is designed to enable industrial clients to incorporate renewable heat into their operations without sacrificing reliability or performance.

Meeting Heat Demand at Scale

Industrial operations require a consistent and often high-volume heat supply to support production lines, drying processes, space heating, and other thermal applications. Unlike intermittent renewables, geothermal energy offers a stable, continuous heat source, delivering base-load thermal energy regardless of external weather conditions. This makes it particularly well-suited to facilities with 24/7 operations or large-scale demand for process heat.

Star Energy’s geothermal systems are designed to interface directly with site-specific infrastructure, including internal heating systems, process circuits, or external energy centres. With well temperatures typically ranging between 50°C and 120°C or higher, geothermal heat can support a wide range of industrial processes without requiring significant adaptation to existing equipment.

Supporting Net Zero in Manufacturing and Processing

As regulatory pressure increases around carbon reporting and emissions targets, UK manufacturers are seeking credible alternatives to gas-fired heating. Geothermal heat represents a long-term solution that aligns with corporate sustainability goals and compliance with schemes such as SECR (Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting) and the UK ETS (Emissions Trading Scheme).

By replacing or supplementing existing gas or oil systems, geothermal installations allow manufacturers to reduce their Scope 1 emissions while maintaining resilience and thermal performance. Star Energy’s systems can operate as standalone heat sources or within hybrid heating frameworks.

End-to-End Project Delivery

Our turnkey delivery model is designed for complex energy users who require integrated engineering, planning, and delivery support. For industrial clients, we manage every aspect of the geothermal lifecycle including:

  • Feasibility studies that assess geological potential, heat load profiles, and system integration options
  • Regulatory engagement, including abstraction and reinjection permitting, environmental surveys, and planning submissions
  • Detailed well and surface system design
  • Construction, drilling, and commissioning services
  • Long-term operations, maintenance, and performance monitoring

We work closely with plant engineers, energy managers, and estates teams to ensure every geothermal system is designed to meet the specific operational and compliance needs of the site.

Flexible Heat Offtake and Network Integration

For sites located within or adjacent to industrial estates, enterprise zones, or regeneration areas, geothermal heat presents the opportunity to serve multiple facilities through shared thermal networks. Star Energy designs and delivers geothermal systems that are capable of supporting a range of configurations, from single-site industrial applications to multi-user campus networks and district heating schemes operated by local authorities. Heat is transferred from the geothermal brine circuit to the user network via plate heat exchangers, which allow for efficient and hygienic energy exchange. Thermal buffers and control systems are incorporated to enable demand-side flexibility, load balancing, and stable operation across sites with variable energy requirements.

Site Suitability and Location

Whilst it is true to say that the availability of geothermal energy development is highly location-dependent, but many industrial areas across the UK are situated above geological formations that are capable of supporting deep geothermal systems and there are many different types of geothermal heat resource that can be deployed in different situations. At Star Energy, we assess site viability through a combination of proprietary screening tools, public domain geological records, and experience drawn from previous developments. We focus on critical feasibility factors, including the depth and temperature of the geological formations, the physical access required for drilling equipment and surface plant installation, the profile and variability of heat demand across the year, and the availability of local infrastructure such as grid connections, water supply, and transport access. Where viable conditions are identified, we provide industrial clients with a clear and detailed technical and commercial evaluation to support informed investment decisions—before any capital expenditure is made.

Future-Proofing Industrial Energy Strategy

As energy markets become more volatile and public policy continues to favour electrification and low-carbon alternatives, geothermal heat offers industrial clients a secure, predictable, and decarbonised energy supply.

With design lifespans of 30+ years, geothermal systems form a stable foundation for long-term sustainability planning.

Whether operating a single manufacturing site or multiple facilities across a region, Star Energy supports clients in building the case for investment, securing the necessary approvals, and delivering fully engineered geothermal heat solutions.
