Geothermal Services

At Star Energy, we provide a complete, end-to-end solution for deep geothermal energy development. From initial concept through to operational delivery, our geothermal services cover every stage of the project lifecycle.

As the UK’s leading turnkey provider in this field, we offer in-house expertise across technical, environmental, regulatory, and construction disciplines, ensuring each project progresses from scoping to commissioning with clarity, rigour, and full compliance. Our approach is built around a structured multi-stage delivery framework, consisting of five phases during project development which sequentially derisks the delivery element (Assessment, Feasibility, Consents, Finalisation, and Construction).

At this point the project then transitions into a lifetime Operate stage, during which the performance is continually assessed and optimised. Each phase includes defined milestones, decision points, and deliverables, enabling clients to de-risk their investment and proceed with confidence. This structured process is outlined visually in our [six-stage model], which details the critical technical, commercial and regulatory tasks completed at each step.

A Fully Integrated Phased Approach

Assessment

  • Initial engagement
  • Preliminary subsurface review
  • Initial heating / cooling concept
  • Review available data
  • Confirm approach for feasibility

The project begins with early-stage evaluation. During the Assessment phase, we engage with the client to conduct a preliminary subsurface review, assess heating or cooling demand, and confirm the strategic approach for feasibility. This stage includes data collation, thermal modelling, and evaluation of existing site infrastructure.

Feasability

  • Reprocessing legacy data
  • Geothermal prognosis & outline well design
  • Identify and secure well site
  • Pre-application notifications
  • Initial commercial reviews & offer

In the Feasibility phase, we reprocess legacy data, develop an initial geothermal prognosis, outline the proposed well design, and identify a suitable site. Pre-application planning engagement is initiated, and we provide a preliminary commercial model. This work culminates in a full feasibility study supported by technical, economic, and regulatory evidence.

Consents

  • Further data aquisition
  • Environmental monitoring requirements
  • Surface FEED
  • Wells BoWD
  • Prepare and submit permits & planning application

The Consents stage involves acquiring further data, preparing formal planning submissions, and addressing environmental monitoring and permitting requirements. We produce surface FEED (front-end engineering design) documents and prepare the Basis of Well Design (BoWD) to support the regulatory submission package.

Finalisation

  • Gain regulatory consents
  • Detailed well & EC engineering
  • Secure utilities
  • Tendering rig & services
  • Confirm grant funding / financing
  • Sanction Project

In Finalisation, we progress detailed well and surface engineering design, confirm grid and utility connections, and lead tendering for rigs and services. We secure final regulatory approvals, confirm funding or financing, and prepare the project for construction.

Construction

  • Install monitoring
  • Construct site
  • Drill and test wells
  • Build energy centre
  • Hook-up & commission

The final phase of project delivery, Construction, includes the full physical realisation of the geothermal system. Star Energy manages all site mobilisation, drilling, plant build, equipment installation, commissioning, and handover to operations. This is where design becomes reality and where geothermal heat begins flowing to the end-user.

Operate

  • Facility operations
  • Preventative & reactive maintenance
  • Shutdowns
  • Commercial operations
  • Performance management

At this stage the plant is operational, and Star Energy’s responsibilities transition into that of performance management and day-to-day operational management of the facility, ensuring optimised delivery of heat to customers over the long term.

Our Geothermal Service Offerings

Our turnkey offering is supported by dedicated geothermal services. These are available as part of our full project delivery or as standalone consultancy and delivery packages depending on client needs.

We lead the planning process, preparing all required documents and coordinating with local authorities, consultees, and other regulators. This includes pre-application engagement, survey coordination, and submission of full planning applications.

For those instances where a customer is looking for a developer to take on delivery of a consented project, we offer a turnkey delivery service.  We finalise the subsurface well designs and integration with the surface plant and manage the procurement of all equipment and services necessary to achieve that, including well components, heat exchangers, pumps, instrumentation, and plant construction.

As well as managing the full suite of drilling services, we construct and install the full build of auxiliary geothermal systems, including well pads, energy centres, M&E works, and plant installation, under a controlled programme with integrated safety and environmental management.

And, once construction is completed and all elements are installed, we conduct system commissioning, including functional testing, thermal performance validation, flow balancing, and integration with the client’s BMS or SCADA platform.

We install and manage real-time monitoring systems that track system performance, environmental compliance, and operational reliability. This includes SCADA integration and remote diagnostics.

We provide scheduled and responsive maintenance services to ensure long-term system efficiency. This includes borehole pump servicing, surface plant checks, and predictive maintenance analytics.

Our experienced team provides advisory support across the lifecycle of a project, ranging from initial review of the geothermal potential at a given location, development of a benefits case, site selection, planning/permitting, etc. We also support investment planning, feasibility validation, technical audits and risk management.

In addition to direct delivery, we can act as construction managers for client-led projects, overseeing contractors, ensuring programme compliance, and delivering quality assurance throughout the build.

We carry out detailed technical, geological, and economic assessments to establish the viability of a geothermal system at a given site. This includes thermal resource estimation, load matching, concept design, and commercial modelling.

A total solution, backed by experience – supported by an in-house engineering team, geologists, geophysicists, drilling engineers, project managers, and regulatory specialists.

Star Energy’s geothermal offering is grounded in technical credibility and delivery experience. Whether you’re exploring geothermal for the first time or advancing a live development, we provide a complete pathway to delivery, supported by in-house engineers, geologists, project managers, and regulatory specialists.

Our structured five-stage process, Assessment, Feasibility, Consents, Finalisation, and Construction, ensures every project is delivered to the highest standards of safety, performance, and compliance. Frequently Asked Questions

Geothermal energy refers to the heat stored naturally beneath the Earth’s surface. This heat can be accessed using deep boreholes and used to provide low-carbon heating for buildings, industry, and infrastructure.

We offer a complete turnkey solution including feasibility studies, geological modelling, planning and consents, well design, drilling, surface system design, construction management, installation, commissioning, operations and maintenance, and performance monitoring.

Yes. Geothermal heat is a continuously available natural resource. When systems are designed properly with reinjection and long-term pressure balancing, they are both renewable and sustainable.

Depending on the size of the installation and the carbon intensity of the electricity used for pump, geothermal systems can reduce emissions by up to 90% compared to conventional gas-based heating.

The first step is to contact our team for a preliminary assessment. We can carry out early-stage desktop studies to evaluate technical potential and discuss a roadmap to development.
